What is a steam turbine, and what are its components?

A steam turbine is a device that converts thermal energy from steam into mechanical work. Steam flows through pipelines, transferring heat to the boiler, where it is heated to high temperature and high pressure, after which it is ejected through nozzles. The main components of a steam turbine include the turbine rotor itself, the turbine condensation system, auxiliary equipment, the shaft sealing system, the ventilation system, the electrical system, and electrical protection devices. Among these, the turbine rotor itself is the critical component, while all other components serve primarily to support and ensure the proper functioning of the rotor.

  What is... Turbine

A steam turbine is a steam-powered device. Steam flows through pipes, transferring heat to the boiler, where it generates high-temperature, high-pressure steam, which is then ejected through nozzles.

The steam turbine generates high-pressure steam, which drives the turbine to rotate and in turn powers the generator to produce electricity. The steam turbine boasts advantages such as high efficiency, simple structure, low cost, and ease of automation!

The steam turbine mainly consists of the turbine body itself, the turbine condensation system, auxiliary equipment for the turbine, the shaft sealing system, the ventilation system, the electrical system, and electrical protection devices. Among these components, the turbine body is the key part, while all other components serve to support and enhance the performance of the turbine body.

  1. The turbine body itself primarily comprises the turbine casing, inlet and outlet flanges, blades, and other components. Its main function is to condense steam into saturated steam and supply it to thermal users. The key components include a steam-water separation device, condensation equipment, steam extraction equipment, shaft seal equipment, bearing lubrication and cooling systems, speed control system, auxiliary power equipment, and ventilation system, among others.

  2. Steam turbine condensation system, Turbine The condensation system is a system used in steam turbines for the recovery and reuse of condensate. Its primary function is to cool water and air coolers. The quality of the condensate must meet the cooling requirements.

  3. Auxiliary equipment for steam turbines refers to the devices that provide the steam turbine itself with the necessary thermal energy, power, as well as water and steam, along with equipment for auxiliary systems. These components form the foundation for ensuring the normal operation of the steam turbine and primarily include steam boilers, oil coolers, high- and low-pressure heaters, condensers, expansion tanks, deaerators, and other equipment serving these systems.

  4. The turbine shaft seal system plays a critical role in the normal operation of the steam turbine. The shaft seal is a mechanical component designed to transfer high-temperature, high-pressure thermal energy while also providing a sealing function.

  5. The steam turbine ventilation system is a ventilation system designed to meet the load requirements of the unit. It generally comprises an air supply system, an exhaust system, and a draft system.

  6. The turbine electrical system is a critical component that ensures the unit can start up and operate safely and reliably.

  7. Turbine Electrical protection devices: Electrical protection devices include high-voltage protection, low-voltage protection, instantaneous trip protection, transformer differential protection, and longitudinal differential protection. Short-circuit protection, overload protection, phase-loss protection, and backup protection following undervoltage, among others.
