Industrial Steam Turbines: Why Do Steam Turbines Need a Vacuum?

An industrial steam turbine is a machine that can effectively harness the kinetic energy of steam and flexibly convert it into other forms of energy. Nowadays, electricity is required everywhere in daily life, but conventional generator sets do not perform very well in terms of energy efficiency and consume a great deal of energy.

An industrial steam turbine is a machine that can effectively harness the kinetic energy of steam and flexibly convert it into other forms of kinetic energy. Nowadays, electricity is indispensable in our daily lives. Traditional generator sets, however, do not perform very well in terms of energy efficiency—they consume a great deal of energy. In contrast, industrial steam turbines can achieve excellent energy-saving results. In practice, we’ve already observed why this equipment needs to be vacuum-packed.

1. After vacuum packaging, the working pressure and temperature of the exhaust pipe decrease, primarily resulting in an increased pressure differential and greater temperature drop. This leads to a larger enthalpy difference between the inlet and outlet, thereby increasing the load rate and power output of industrial steam turbines. As a result, steam energy utilization can be improved, and the quality of the condensate can also be enhanced.
2. During the initial rotation, a large amount of steam is required to overcome the friction in the rolling bearings and the inertial torque of the rotor, thereby increasing the steam impact force on the blades.
3. Because there is gas remaining inside the cylinder, the friction effect on the last-stage long-blade fan is intensified, leading to an increase in exhaust steam temperature.
4. Steam flow is continuous and high-speed, allowing for a large total flow rate across the entire plant area and thus delivering substantial power output. Industrial steam turbines with high power output can operate at higher steam pressures and temperatures, resulting in higher thermal efficiency.
5. Because gas remains inside the condenser, the heat exchange efficiency of the carbonated beverage heat exchanger within the condenser is reduced, causing the exhaust steam temperature to rise and leading to deformation of the cylinder’s metal materials. Additionally, the expansion joints of the copper tubes in the condenser’s air-conditioning system have become loose, resulting in water leakage.

6. Due to the non-condensability of the gas, the exhaust steam pressure of the industrial-driven turbine rises, causing the condenser’s anti-theft door to shift into an open position.
Since vacuum pumps are actually continuously operating throughout the entire application process of industrial-driven turbines—though this operation isn't readily visible on the equipment's surface—excessive use of vacuum pumps can lead to excessively high operating pressures and excessively high exhaust temperatures, which are detrimental to the equipment's performance. Therefore, it is essential to immediately perform vacuum packaging of the equipment.
